Navi Mumbai International Airport: A Major Milestone for India’s Aviation Infrastructure
On October 8-9, during his visit to Maharashtra, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Navi Mumbai International Airport, a significant achievement for India’s aviation infrastructure. The airport is expected to start its commercial operations in December 2025.
With this inauguration, Mumbai is now in the ranks of global cities like London, New York, and Tokyo, which boast multiple international airports. PM Modi also took a walkthrough of the newly built airport.
This airport is a crucial step towards the Prime Minister’s vision of making India a global aviation hub. As the second international airport for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, it will work with the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) to manage passenger and cargo traffic, reduce congestion, and enhance operational efficiency.
10 Key Facts about India’s New AI-Enabled Aviation Hub:
1. The NMIA was developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model with an estimated cost of Rs 19,650 crore.
2. It covers an area of 1,160 hectares and is designed to handle 90 million passengers annually (MPPA).
3. The airport has the capacity to handle over 3 million metric tonnes of cargo per year, improving India’s logistics efficiency.
4. This airport, the largest Greenfield airport project in India, was developed through a PPP Model, with participation from public agencies and private investors.
5. It is designed with intelligent air traffic management, smart surveillance, and automated passenger processing for seamless operations.
6. The use of AI technology will ensure efficient check-ins, baggage management, and crowd control.
7. The airport will feature an Automated People Mover (APM), a transit system connecting all four passenger terminals for easy inter-terminal transfers, and a landside APM linking the city-side infrastructure.
8. It will have dedicated storage for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), solar power generation of approximately 47 MW, and EV bus services for public connectivity across the city, in line with sustainable practices.
9. NMIA will be the first airport in the country to be connected by Water Taxi.
10. Phase 1 of the airport is complete, and commercial flights are set to begin in December 2025.
During his visit, PM Modi also inaugurated the final phase of Mumbai Metro Line-3 and launched India’s first integrated common mobility app, ‘Mumbai One,’ for 11 public transport operators. This two-day visit to Maharashtra marks a significant milestone in the development of India’s aviation infrastructure.
