Airline Industry Faces Worsening Delays and Cancellations Amid Government Shutdown

The ongoing government shutdown in the United States has caused major concerns for airline pilots and industry officials. According to Capt. Dennis Tajer, spokesman for American Airlines’ Allied Pilots Association, the effects on the industry will only continue to worsen in the coming days unless the Senate passes funding.

Tajer stated that pilots who experienced the 2019 government shutdown are experiencing a form of “PTSD” as they anticipate the situation to deteriorate. He emphasized that the longer the shutdown continues, the more severe the consequences will be on air travel, both for employees who are working without pay and the overall air traffic control system.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy also warned that the Federal Aviation Administration’s air traffic controllers have been taking more sick leave than usual, causing delays and cancellations for flights. As a result, the FAA has been forced to implement ground delays to ensure there are enough personnel to monitor planes, which then affects pilots, flight attendants, and other staff.

Pilots have a limited number of hours they can work in a day, and delays in airports can quickly use up these hours, resulting in flight cancellations. Tajer, whose union represents 15,000 American Airlines pilots, stressed that the longer the shutdown continues, the more severe the impact will be on the airline industry.

Delta CEO Ed Bastian also expressed concern, stating that the situation could worsen significantly by next week. In the past, a month-long government shutdown in 2018-2019 ended shortly after an increase in sick calls from air traffic controllers caused significant travel disruptions in the New York area.

While delays and cancellations are frustrating for passengers, Tajer assured that they are not indicative of any danger in the skies. He explained that the slowing down of air traffic is a safety measure, and airports will not let it reach a dangerous level.

However, the consequences of the shutdown are not limited to airline passengers. As Tajer pointed out, for every pilot missing a day off at home, there are passengers who have missed important events due to flight delays and cancellations. This situation not only affects the airlines but also causes distress for passengers and their families.

In conclusion, the ongoing government shutdown is causing significant and worsening delays and cancellations in the airline industry. As Tajer appealed, it is crucial for the government to reach a resolution soon to avoid further disruptions and consequences for all involved.
