New Direct Flight to the Algarve Continues to Attract American Tourists

The recently introduced direct flight from Newark to Faro has been a great success, with United Airlines announcing that this route will continue to operate until 2026. This is great news for the Algarve region, as it brings in a new kind of tourist that is not just interested in sun and beach.

According to André Gomes, an official from the Algarve Tourism Board, American tourists are seeking authentic and immersive experiences that allow them to connect with the local culture and traditions. This type of tourist also brings added value to the region, as they have a significant spending power and often explore the entire country, not just the Algarve. In fact, many of them are even considering buying a second home or relocating to the Algarve.

This direct flight has also had a positive impact on tourism in Portugal as a whole. The National Institute of Statistics (INE) reported a significant increase in North American and Canadian tourists in August 2025. This shows that the direct flight not only benefits the Algarve region, but also encourages tourists to explore other parts of the country.

In terms of revenue, the Algarve was the top contributor in August, accounting for 36. 3% of total revenues in the country, according to the INE. This further highlights the success of the direct flight and the appeal of the Algarve as a holiday destination.

Contrary to popular belief, the number of Portuguese tourists in the Algarve also increased by 3. 4% in August compared to the same period last year. This goes against the narrative that Portuguese tourists are avoiding the Algarve due to high prices. It is clear that the Algarve remains a popular holiday destination for both international and national tourists.

The direct flight from Newark to Faro will resume on May 15, 2026, providing even more opportunities for tourists to visit the Algarve. This flight not only benefits the Algarve region, but also contributes to the overall tourism industry in Portugal. The Algarve continues to be a top choice for tourists, offering a unique and authentic experience that cannot be found elsewhere.
