The Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association (MHRA) and the Gozo Tourism Association (GTA) have expressed their enthusiasm for the announcement of a direct air link between Malta and New York, set to begin in June of next year. This route will be operated by Delta Airlines and is expected to have a significant impact on Malta’s tourism industry.

According to the MHRA, the introduction of this direct air link is a game-changer for Malta’s tourism sector. This connection with the United States presents unprecedented opportunities to attract high-value visitors from one of the world’s largest outbound tourism markets. The American traveler is known for longer stays, higher spending, and a strong interest in cultural heritage, gastronomy, and authentic experiences, all of which are areas where Malta excels.

Aside from the benefits to leisure tourism, the new route is also expected to have a positive impact on the MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions) industry and religious tourism. These sectors have strong potential in attracting American visitors, and improved accessibility will make Malta a more attractive destination for international events, faith-based travel, and niche segments that align with the country’s strengths.

For Malta, a small island nation competing on a global scale, direct air links are vital. The New York-Malta route will reinforce the country’s position as a quality destination, provide easier access for U. S. visitors, and increase its international profile at a time of fierce competition.

Tony Zahra, President of the MHRA, called this announcement a historic step forward and highlighted the U. S. market’s promising potential for quality tourism. He also commended the efforts of the Malta Tourism Authority and Deputy Prime Minister Dr.Ian Borg in making this vision a reality, stating that these investments in connectivity are crucial to securing the future of the tourism sector.

The MHRA reiterated its full support for this initiative and looks forward to continued collaboration with the government and stakeholders to ensure the successful rollout of this strategic route.

The Gozo Tourism Association also hailed this development as a significant milestone in enhancing Malta’s global connectivity. The new direct flights between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and Malta International Airport will address a long-standing gap in air links to North America and is expected to further boost tourist arrivals from the United States and Canada. It will also serve as a valuable connection for Maltese communities in North America and Malta.

The establishment of a direct air link with North America aligns with the Malta Tourism Strategy 2030 and Envision 2050, both of which prioritize the development of quality tourism. This new route is a testament to Malta’s commitment to continuously improving its tourism industry and providing visitors with exceptional experiences.
