Runway at LaGuardia Airport Reopens After Fatal Collision

After being closed for several days, the runway at New York’s LaGuardia Airport where a plane collided with a fire truck has finally reopened. The collision resulted in the deaths of both pilots and injuries to several others.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced that the tarmac was deemed safe and in compliance with Federal Aviation Administration regulations for operation and was reopened at 10 a. m. on Thursday. The agency, which oversees the region’s airports, stated that the reopening of the second runway at LaGuardia, one of the busiest airports in the country, will help restore full operational capacity. However, travelers are still advised to check with their airline for any potential flight delays or cancellations.

According to Flight Aware, a flight tracking website, in the last 24 hours, LaGuardia has experienced over 300 cancelled flights, making it the airport with the most delays and cancellations in the country.

The Air Canada plane involved in the collision, as well as the fire truck, were removed from the crash site on Wednesday evening. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is currently investigating the incident.

The NTSB stated on Thursday that the fire truck has been relocated to a secure location and referred any questions about the status of the plane to Air Canada. The airline did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Air Canada has stated that the plane will be placed in a hanger and the process of reuniting passengers with their baggage and belongings will begin shortly.

In response to criticism for his English-only message of condolence, Michael Rousseau, CEO of Air Canada, issued an apology on Thursday for not being able to express himself in French.

The collision occurred on Sunday night when an Air Canada regional jet, carrying 76 people from Montreal, struck a fire truck that had been cleared to cross the runway in response to a separate incident on another plane. Approximately 40 people were treated for injuries, including two firefighters and a flight attendant who were thrown onto the tarmac while still strapped in her seat. Most of the injured have been released from the hospital.

In conclusion, the runway at LaGuardia Airport has been reopened after being closed due to a fatal collision between a plane and a fire truck. The incident resulted in the deaths of both pilots and injuries to several others. The NTSB is currently investigating the incident and Air Canada has issued an apology for their CEO’s English-only message of condolence.
