Guyana to See Increase in European Oil Sector Workers with KLM’s Return

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is set to resume its service between Georgetown and Amsterdam on Wednesday, marking their return to Guyana after several decades. According to Public Works Minister Deodat Indar, this decision was largely influenced by the growing number of oil sector workers traveling from Europe to Guyana.

Indar explained that a majority of offshore marine captains, drillers, and engineers enter the country through Amsterdam, making it a key hub for the oil industry. Prior to KLM’s return, these workers had to travel through London or New York. With this new service, the economic model for KLM to operate in Guyana becomes viable.

In addition to providing a vital airbridge for oil sector workers, KLM’s wide-bodied aircraft will also offer a more convenient experience for Guyanese travelers. Instead of having to make multiple stops, passengers can now fly directly from Cheddi Jagan International Airport to Amsterdam Airport, Schiphol in The Netherlands. This will also give Guyanese a similar experience to their neighboring country Suriname, which has had a direct flight to Amsterdam for decades.

The decision to return to Guyana was also praised by Netherlands Ambassador to Guyana, Walter Oostelbos, who credited the country’s Minister of Tourism, Industry, and Commerce, Dr.Irfaan Ali, for his efforts in using the development of the oil and gas sector to attract foreign investors.

KLM’s return to Guyana is a significant development for the country, as it not only provides a direct connection to Europe but also showcases the growing opportunities in the oil and gas industry. This new service will not only benefit the economy but also improve the travel experience for both locals and international visitors.
