JetBlue Expands Its Reach from Fort Lauderdale with Eight New Routes and More to Come
On Wednesday, JetBlue announced the launch of eight new routes from its hub in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with six more connections planned for later this year. This move is part of the airline’s strategy to capture market share previously held by Spirit Airlines, which ceased operations on May 2. JetBlue has also hired former Spirit employees in South Florida as it continues to build up its presence in the region.
The new routes launched on Wednesday include daily service between Fort Lauderdale and Cleveland, Ohio, followed by connections to Baltimore (three times daily), Charlotte, North Carolina (three times daily), Nashville, Tennessee (three times daily), Detroit (twice daily), Houston (three times daily), Chicago O’Hare (twice daily), and Ponce, Puerto Rico (daily) on Thursday. These routes were previously announced in May.
JetBlue has also announced six more routes set to begin operating this fall. These include Indianapolis (Nov. 2), Columbus, Ohio (Nov. 2), San Diego (Nov. 19), as well as Barranquilla (Oct. 1) and Cali (Oct. 15) in Colombia. The airline will also begin serving Caracas, Venezuela, with a date yet to be confirmed. This will be the first time JetBlue has operated flights to Caracas, and the decision to do so was signaled in a statement released in May.
The Department of Transportation lifted a ban on passenger and cargo flights to Venezuela in January, following the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. American Airlines was the first U. S. carrier to resume flights to the country, with its Miami-Caracas service starting on April 30. United Airlines has also announced its plans to reconnect Houston and Caracas in early August.
JetBlue CEO Joanna Geraghty expressed her excitement for the airline’s growth in Fort Lauderdale, stating, “We are very excited about this next phase of growth and look forward to delivering great value to the people of South Florida. ” She added, “We’re building on our already strong foundation by adding more destinations, creating more connections, and giving customers even more reasons to choose JetBlue.
With the addition of these new routes, JetBlue will now operate over 125 daily departures to more than 55 nonstop destinations from Fort Lauderdale. This expansion not only benefits the airline but also provides more options for travelers in the region, making JetBlue an even more attractive choice for their travel needs.
