ITA Airways and United Airlines have recently announced a new codeshare agreement, which will allow for a stronger presence of ITA Airways in the United States and provide passengers with seamless access to a wider network of destinations in Italy, North America, and beyond.

This collaboration is in line with ITA’s strategy to expand their long-haul services, focusing on increasing intercontinental connections from their hub in Rome Fiumicino and catering to the growing demand from international travelers. The codeshare aims to enhance ITA’s offerings in the North American market, which is their second most important market after domestic operations.

CEO and General Manager of ITA Airways, Joerg Eberhart, stated, “The codeshare agreement with United Airlines is a significant step towards our goal of expanding our network to new intercontinental destinations. This partnership allows us to strengthen our presence in the U. S. market and we are excited to welcome American passengers on our flights from Rome Fiumicino to various Italian and international destinations.

Under this agreement, travelers from both airlines can purchase a single ticket for connecting flights operated by the other carrier. ITA flights will carry the UA code, while United flights will carry the AZ code. Additionally, passengers will be able to earn and redeem points in the respective loyalty programs (Volare for ITA Airways and MileagePlus for United Airlines) and access airport lounges based on their loyalty tier.

Patrick Quayle, Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances at United Airlines, expressed his excitement about the collaboration, saying, “ITA Airways and United both share a commitment to providing our customers with more choices, destinations, and opportunities to explore. With this new loyalty and codeshare cooperation, our customers will benefit from even greater connectivity and a more seamless travel experience when flying on each other’s networks.

The codeshare will expand destination options for ITA Airways passengers to U. S. cities like Dallas, Denver, Honolulu, Houston, and Newark, in addition to their already existing flights to Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, San Francisco, and Washington. On the other hand, United Airlines passengers will now have greater access to Italian destinations such as Bari, Bologna, Florence, Catania, and Turin, as well as other European connections.
