Bark Air: The Luxury Airline Designed Specifically for Dogs
Flying with a dog on a commercial airline can often be a stressful and unpleasant experience, with strict size limits, cramped carriers under seats, and the anxiety of cargo holds. This is especially difficult for owners of larger breeds. However, Bark Air has set out to change this by designing flights specifically with dogs in mind, rather than squeezing them into rules meant for luggage.
Founded in 2024 by the team behind BarkBox, Bark Air offers a private jet-like experience for dogs and their owners. Canines are treated to leather seats, mid-flight massages, and even bone broth champagne. For owners, it’s a relief to finally board a plane where their pets are considered the primary flyers.
Tailored Flights for Canines
Every Bark Air journey begins with a call from the concierge team, who gather information about the dog’s personality, favorite treats, and comfort needs. This information is used to determine seating arrangements, choose calming aids, and adjust the cabin environment to reduce stress during the flight.
Bark Air operates its flights on business jets provided by Talon Air, with current routes including New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, London, Paris, Madrid, and Lisbon. Charters are also available to destinations like Honolulu or Tokyo, and the number of passengers varies depending on the size and mix of dogs on board.
Luxurious Lounges and Pup Passports
Passengers and their furry friends are treated to a luxurious experience from the moment they book their flight. The Bark Air experience begins at a private terminal, such as Teterboro in New Jersey or Van Nuys in Los Angeles, where dogs receive custom “pup passports” and have a chance to socialize before boarding. A certified trainer oversees interactions and finalizes seating arrangements to ensure a harmonious cabin.
Boarding takes place in small groups across the tarmac, with owners walking with their dogs for a photo opportunity by the jet stairs before presenting handwritten boarding passes listing their pet’s name. This structured process helps to keep the boarding process calm and stress-free for all passengers.
Fine Dining for Dogs and Humans
Once the flight is in the air, the crew begins food service, which is designed with dogs in mind. The menu includes a wide selection of treats, from Barkaccinos topped with whipped cream to pork-and-apple biscuits, yogurt-and-berry bites, and freeze-dried liver. The signature touch is “Doggie Chompagne,” a bone broth served in glasses to resemble Champagne service.
Of course, there is plenty for humans to enjoy as well, including roast beef sandwiches, chicken pesto pasta, and desserts like cheesecake. Champagne and cocktails are also available, but the focus remains on providing a luxurious experience for the four-legged passengers.
Luxury at a Price
While the cost may seem steep, with one-way tickets starting at $6,000 for a dog and one human on U. S.
