Hong Kong Customs Seizes $18 Million Worth of Drugs from Inbound Traveler at Airport

On September 14, Hong Kong Customs discovered a drug trafficking case at Hong Kong International Airport, involving an inbound air traveler. Approximately 25 kilograms of suspected drugs were seized, with an estimated market value of $18 million.

The suspect, a 38-year-old male arriving from New York, United States, was found to have the drugs in his checked luggage during customs clearance. He was immediately arrested.

After investigation, the man has been charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug and will appear in West Kowloon Magistrates’ Courts on September 15.

Customs will continue to enhance their efforts in combating drug trafficking through intelligence analysis. They also urge the public to stay vigilant and not engage in such activities for financial gain. It is illegal to carry controlled substances into or out of Hong Kong, and individuals should not accept requests from others to do so.

Customs will continue to use a risk assessment approach and target travelers from high-risk areas in order to combat international drug trafficking.

Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in a dangerous drug is a serious offense, with a maximum penalty of a fine of $5 million and life imprisonment upon conviction.

The public is encouraged to report any suspected drug trafficking activities to Customs’ 24-hour hotline at 182 8080, or through their dedicated crime-reporting email (crimereport@customs. gov. hk) or online form (eform. cefs. gov. hk/form/ced002). This helps Customs in their efforts to eradicate drug trafficking in Hong Kong.
