Do Airlines Have to Notify You When They Change Your Seat Assignment?

Have you ever experienced a sudden change in your assigned seat on a flight? This was the case for Jay Libove, an IT consultant who was flying from Philadelphia to Barcelona. His airline changed his plane not once, but twice, without informing him. As a result, he ended up in a completely different seat than the one he had carefully chosen.

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident. Many passengers have reported similar situations where they lose their chosen seat due to a change in the plane or flight demand. But what are your rights when this happens? Can you get compensation for the inconvenience?

According to Vlad Polyanskiy, chief marketing officer at FlightRefunder, a company that helps passengers negotiate compensation from airlines, this is a common issue that causes stress for travelers, especially those with special needs or traveling for work. However, many passengers are not aware of their rights and do not receive any compensation for the inconvenience.

So, what are your rights when you lose your chosen seat? While there are some rights in place, they may not be as extensive as you might think.

In North America, if you are downgraded to a lower class of service, the airline must refund the price difference between your original ticket and the lower class. In the EU and UK, the airline is required to compensate you between 30-75% of the ticket price, depending on the flight distance.

If you are simply given a different seat within the same class of service, the rules are different. In Canada, the EU, and UK, if you paid extra for your chosen seat, you are entitled to a refund and possibly even compensation, depending on the airline’s policy. In the US, if you are moved to a different seat within the same class of service, you are entitled to a refund of your seat reservation fee.

In Libove’s case, his seat was changed within the same class of service, and the price of his seat assignment was already included in his premium economy ticket. This meant that the airline did not have to notify him of the change and did not owe him any compensation.

So, how can you get compensation for a changed seat? While you do have some rights, getting the airline to honor them can be a challenge. The key is to act quickly and contact the airline as soon as possible. Keep a record of your booking, including receipts and seat details, and be aware of your rights. While the airline may offer vouchers or other forms of compensation, remember that you may be entitled to a full refund, especially if the changes caused a significant delay.

However, there is a growing consensus that air travelers do not have enough rights when it comes to seat changes. John Udemezue, a digital marketing entrepreneur, lost his seat assignment on a flight from New York to Chicago and believes that travelers should push for clearer policies and fair treatment.
