NASA and other scientists have recently released a report showing that certain parts of New York, including the Hudson Valley, are sinking. This study, conducted by the Columbia Climate School’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, examined 28 of the largest cities in the United States, each with a population of over 600,000.

According to the study, 25 major cities in the US are experiencing sinking due to groundwater extraction. The city with the fastest rate of sinking is Houston, Texas, with some areas dropping 20 millimeters per year. Other cities such as Dallas, Seattle, Chicago, Denver, and New York City are sinking between two and ten millimeters per year.

The study also revealed that at least 10% of New York City is sinking at a rate of 3 millimeters per year. This is a cause for concern as it could lead to severe and potentially catastrophic damage to infrastructure and properties in the city.

NASA has also shared satellite images that show the land major East Coast cities are built on is sinking. This includes New York City and other parts of New York State. According to NASA, at least 867,000 properties and critical infrastructure, such as highways, railways, airports, dams, and levees, are at risk due to the sinking.

Another study has determined that the Hudson Valley, Long Island, New York City, and the Capital Region are all “vulnerable” to rising sea levels. If the sea level rises by around 6 feet
