European Airports Warn of Potential Jet Fuel Shortage Amidst Iran Conflict

As tensions continue to escalate between the US and Iran, European airports are sounding the alarm that jet fuel shortages may hit the summer holiday season if oil supplies do not resume flowing through the Strait of Hormuz in the next three weeks.

Airports Council International (ACI) Europe has reportedly sent a letter to EU transport commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas, warning that the bloc is just three weeks away from facing shortages. The letter, first reported by the Financial Times, raises concerns about the potential for flight or holiday cancellations if the conflict persists.

The recent spike in oil prices, as a result of Iran effectively closing the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation, has already caused chaos and protests in Ireland and Norway. In Ireland, fuel shortages and travel disruptions have occurred, while in Norway, truck drivers have organized a protest, known as “Dieselbrølet” or “the diesel roar,” in response to the sharp rise in fuel prices.

According to the Irish government, the protests have endangered critical supplies of food, fuel, clean water, and animal feed. The government has put the army on standby to help remove blockades, and the police have warned protesters to disperse or face arrest.

The conflict in the Middle East has also had a significant impact on the US, as evidenced by the latest inflation data released on Friday. The consumer price index (CPI) showed a 0. 9% increase in March, the largest monthly jump in nearly two years. The spike in prices is largely attributed to the 10. 9% rise in energy prices, which includes a 21. 2% increase in gasoline prices.

The blue chip S&P 500 and tech-heavy Nasdaq indexes opened higher on Friday, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0. 3%. Bernard Yaros, lead US economist at Oxford Economics, warns that inflation is likely to remain “uncomfortably strong” in the US this month. He predicts that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates later this year to “shore up the labor market” in response to the energy supply shock.

The duration and intensity of the Iran war remain a wildcard in the outlook for both inflation and monetary policy. If the conflict continues to disrupt global supply chains and drive up energy prices, it could have a significant impact on the US and global economies.

In Europe, the situation is also causing concern, with the warning from ACI Europe about potential jet fuel shortages adding to the already precarious economic situation. The spike in oil prices has particularly affected Asia, where prices have risen by 163% year-on-year. In Europe, prices have increased by 138%, and the global scramble for fuel has led to a shortage in some countries.

The conflict in the Middle East has also sparked protests and disruptions in other parts of Europe, such as France and England.
