New FedEx Facility at East Midlands Airport Boosts Global Trade Opportunities
A new 19,000 sq. ft freight hub has opened at East Midlands Airport, providing the region with enhanced access to global trade opportunities. The facility, built by the multibillion-dollar company Federal Express Corporation, also known as FedEx, officially opened on September 16.
According to Steve Johnson, managing director of FedEx’s air operations in the UK, the new facility will improve freight handling efficiency and provide businesses in the East Midlands with greater access to the US, Asia-Pacific, European Union, and other international markets. He stated, “This new freight facility builds on the momentum of our recent expansion in Manchester and demonstrates our ongoing commitment to strengthening our operations across the UK. Together, these commitments create a more resilient and connected FedEx network, enabling us to support the increasing flow of goods between the East Midlands, the Northwest, and international markets.
With over 17 million packages delivered globally each day, FedEx is the world’s largest delivery company. The new facility in East Midlands will allow for a more streamlined and efficient process for preparing freight cargo, increasing the company’s ability to meet rising customer demand across key international trade routes.
East Midlands Airport, which handled £37 billion of freight last year, has seen significant growth in its cargo operations in recent years and has plans for further expansion. The airport is currently working on plans to add 122,000m2 of warehouse space, new taxiways, and stands for up to 18 additional aircraft. This expansion is expected to create over 20,000 jobs in the future.
Located in the heart of the UK, East Midlands Airport offers a competitive edge for freight trade with its central location, level of runway capacity, and comparatively low landing fees. Cargo planes typically land at the airport from 6pm until the early hours of the morning, with passenger flights resuming afterwards. This operation provides connections to 185 of the world’s largest cities, including New York, Dubai, Tokyo, and Mumbai.
The new FedEx facility at East Midlands Airport marks a significant step towards boosting global trade opportunities for the region. With its efficient operations and strategic location, the airport continues to play a vital role in facilitating international business growth and strengthening the UK’s position in the global market.
