Delta Air Lines is expanding its presence in the West African aviation market with the launch of a new seasonal daily nonstop service between Accra and Atlanta. The new service will begin on December 1, 2025, as the airline celebrates its 100th anniversary. This move highlights Delta’s long-term investment in Ghana’s aviation sector, trade connectivity, and community development.
At a media briefing in Accra, Michael Thomas, General Manager of Communications at Delta, emphasized the importance of Ghana in the airline’s African network. He stated, “Ghana is a key gateway for Delta in Africa. Our decision to expand service from Accra reflects our confidence in this market and our dedication to providing top-notch travel experiences for our customers. ” Thomas also noted that Delta’s 19 years of continuous operations in Ghana have demonstrated the strength and potential of the country’s travel and business markets.
Delta first began serving Ghana in 2006 and has since transported approximately 1. 5 million passengers on its flagship Accra-New York JFK route. With the addition of the new Atlanta route, the airline will now offer two direct flights from Accra to the United States – a year-round daily flight to New York and a seasonal daily flight to Atlanta. This will also allow travelers to connect to over 215 destinations across the United States seamlessly.
Aside from passenger traffic, Delta’s presence in Ghana has had a positive impact on trade, tourism, and diaspora connectivity, providing a vital link for business and family travel. Mary Abisola Gbobaniyi, Delta’s Sales Manager for West Africa, highlighted the airline’s contributions beyond the aviation industry. She stated, “Delta’s commitment goes beyond just connecting markets. We also strive to create jobs, support local initiatives, and partner with communities. As a company, we reinvest 1% of our global profits into programs like Junior Achievement Africa and Breast Care International to ensure our impact extends beyond the skies.
Delta’s social investments in Ghana are diverse and far-reaching. The airline has been in a partnership with Breast Care International (BCI) for over a decade, reaching over 150,000 people with breast cancer education, screening 20,000 individuals, and identifying around 2,000 suspected cases. Through targeted rural campaigns, over 65,000 women have received screenings, leading to improved early detection and health outcomes.
Delta is the only U. S. airline that offers nonstop service between Accra and New York and connects to over 200 destinations across North America. The airline has been serving Africa since 2006 and continues to expand its network to meet the growing demand. As a global airline based in the United States, Delta is committed to connecting customers across its vast network with a focus on making travel personalized, enjoyable, and connected.
In 2024, Delta safely and reliably served over 200 million customers while remaining an industry leader in customer service innovation.
