Newark Liberty International Airport, located in New Jersey, is causing concern for travelers due to recent disruptions and communication outages. As one of the busiest airports in the United States, serving almost 49 million passengers last year, the recent incidents have raised questions about the safety and reliability of the airport.

Construction on the runways and a shortage of air traffic control staff have contributed to a significant increase in flight delays and cancellations. However, it is the communication failures that have caused the most worry. In the last two weeks, there have been two outages between air traffic controllers and pilots, with the most recent one lasting approximately 90 seconds.

Passengers are understandably anxious about the safety of air travel from Newark Airport. Mikhail Liverpool, a 37-year-old traveler from Somerset County, expressed his concern after experiencing a four-hour delay on his flight. He stated, “It’s a little concerning that this is the second outage in under 30 days. The fact that they didn’t fix the problem the first time is worrisome.”

Mark Nelson, a frequent traveler and systems engineer, has decided to avoid flying from Newark altogether after the two outages. He warned others, “If the FAA or someone tells you it is safe to fly from Newark, do not believe them.”

Newark Airport already had a poor reputation among travelers, ranking last in customer satisfaction in a JD Power study last year. The recent disruptions have only added to the frustration of passengers
