Canadian Cities See Increase in Trips to United States

Recent data has shown a shift in the trends for Canadian travelers, with major cities such as Vancouver and Ottawa seeing a rise in trips to the United States. This trend, which initially started in the province of Alberta, is now spreading to other cities with impressive numbers.

The accessibility of flights to the United States has been a significant factor in this shift. While some airlines, like WestJet and Air Canada, have reduced their flights, others, such as American Airlines and Porter Airlines, have increased their service. American Airlines has even added a new flight to Quebec City, while Porter Airlines has surprised Canadians with a different approach to the tension between Canada and the U. S. by adding several new flights.

Vancouver International Airport Sets Record for U. S.

The summer of 2025 has been a busy one at Vancouver International Airport, with a record number of passengers expected between June 15th and Labour Day. According to YVR spokesperson Alyssa Smith, this is due in part to the airport’s new technology, such as CATSA, which allows passengers to keep their shoes on and avoid removing laptops or liquids. Additionally, Air Canada has introduced a new biometric screening process, saving time for travelers.

While overall numbers have slightly decreased compared to 2024, the month of July saw a minor decrease of only 2. 2% in the number of passengers traveling to the U. S. from Vancouver. However, this still set a record as the third busiest month for U. S. travel from the airport. This can be attributed to the substantial number of cruise ships docking in Vancouver and major events and conferences taking place in the city.

Ottawa International Airport Also Sees Increase in U. S.

The trend of increased trips to the U. S. from Canadian cities is not limited to Vancouver. Ottawa International Airport has also seen a surge in U. S. travel, particularly to Florida and Washington. In the first six months of 2025, there was a 7% increase in travel to the U. S. compared to 2024.

This increase can be attributed to Porter Airlines, which has added more direct flights to various states in the U. S. While other major Canadian airlines have announced cancellations of U. S. flights, Porter has taken a different approach and expanded their routes to American destinations.

Porter Airlines Takes Different Approach to U. S.

While other airlines have reduced their U. S. flights, Porter Airlines has increased their service to the United States with new routes to cities like Phoenix and San Diego, as well as increased service to popular destinations like Las Vegas and Fort Lauderdale. The airline continues to view New York as a central hub and a “long-term market” and is constantly expanding their flights to the state.
