American Airlines Invests $30 Million in Chicago O’Hare Hub
American Airlines is making a bold move by investing $30 million in its Chicago O’Hare hub, just weeks after CEO Robert Isom vowed to maintain a strong presence in the city. The investment was approved by a judge for the U. S. bankruptcy court in New York’s Southern District, allowing American to take over two gates previously used by Spirit Airlines, which is currently going through its second bankruptcy filing.
American Airlines currently operates its central hub at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, the third-busiest airport in the world. However, the recent investment in O’Hare shows that the airline is committed to competing with its main rival, United Airlines, which also has a major presence at the airport. Together, American and United account for the majority of flights to and from O’Hare. In fact, this month, American offered over 2. 7 million seats while United had more than 3. 8 million available seats, according to data from Diio by Cirium.
During its third-quarter earnings call, Isom confidently stated that American would not be deterred from investing in O’Hare, despite criticism from United’s CEO Scott Kirby. Isom believes that Chicago can support two hub carriers and that American has been serving the city for nearly 100 years with no plans to stop. In fact, O’Hare is set to become American’s third-largest hub.
Isom also shared that subscriptions to American’s frequent flyer program, AAdvantage, have increased by 20% in the Chicago area. This indicates a strong and loyal customer base in the city.
However, American did suffer a setback earlier this year when it lost gates to United following a legal battle. With the additional gates, United wasted no time in announcing 10 new routes from O’Hare to destinations in California, Oregon, Utah, and more. The carrier also revealed plans for new routes to markets in the upper Midwest and Pacific Northwest.
In conclusion, American Airlines is not backing down from its presence at O’Hare and is determined to compete with United for the top spot. The $30 million investment in the airport is a clear indication of the airline’s commitment to serving the city and its passengers for years to come.
