American Airlines Makes History with First Flight to Vero Beach
On Thursday, American Airlines made its debut in Vero Beach, becoming the third commercial airline to serve the city. The inaugural flight from Charlotte, NC arrived at 11:21 a. m. , a few minutes early, with 61 passengers on board.
The flight was operated by American Airlines subsidiary PSA Airlines, using a small CR9-Canadair jet with a capacity for 76 passengers. Upon arrival, the plane had to wait for a Breeze Airbus heading to Hartford, Connecticut, to clear the runway. This is due to ongoing renovations and expansion of the Vero Beach terminal, which is expected to be completed this summer with a budget of $5 million.
The return flight to Charlotte departed at 12:28 p. m. , slightly delayed, with 46 paying passengers. American Airlines now joins Breeze Airways and jetBlue in offering regular passenger service to Vero Beach. Breeze Airways, headquartered in Utah, has been providing point-to-point services to multiple cities in the Northeast since 2023. In December of last year, jetBlue also began daily flights to and from JFK airport in New York City and Logan Airport in Boston.
At a ribbon-cutting ceremony, airport director Todd Scher expressed his excitement for American Airlines’ arrival, calling it a “new milestone in the history of the Vero Beach Airport. ” He also highlighted the convenience of connecting to 170 cities in 26 countries through American Airlines’ hub in Charlotte.
Vero Beach Mayor John Cotugno also shared his sentiments, saying that American Airlines’ presence is a recognition of the city’s uniqueness. James Seadler, who oversees regional stations in Florida for American Airlines, also expressed his excitement for the new addition to their network, catering to both business and leisure travelers.
