American Airlines Employees Accuse CEO of Crippling the Company

American Airlines CEO Robert Isom has come under fire from the company’s flight attendants and pilots, who claim that his leadership has caused significant harm to the embattled airline. In the last few days, two unions representing over 44,000 American Airlines workers have issued scathing statements against Isom.

Julie Hedrick, president of the Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA), stated on Monday that the “level of failure” at American Airlines starts with Isom. This comes just days after the Allied Pilots Association (APA), representing 16,000 pilots, also criticized the airline’s poor commercial performance in a letter.

The APFA has gone as far as to issue a vote of no confidence in Isom and has called for an end to the “relentless downward spiral” he has allegedly caused. The union cites issues such as mismanaged operations during weather events, which led to over 9,000 flight cancellations in January due to Winter Storm Fern. According to the APFA, employees were left sleeping on cold airport floors, and when they complained, Isom reportedly told them it was “part of our job.

Hedrick also expressed concerns about Isom’s leadership, stating that it shows a “complete disregard for the human element” and is actively harming both American Airlines and its employees.

Meanwhile, the APA Board of Directors also released a statement, stating that American Airlines is on a path of underperformance and will not be able to “close the gap” with its premium competitors. Despite being the largest US air carrier, American Airlines has fallen behind its rivals, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, in terms of profits and market capitalization.

Isom has responded to some of the concerns raised, agreeing to meet with the APA’s leadership to discuss the handling of Winter Storms Fern and Gianna, pilot attendance policies, and the company’s business plan to improve its performance. Isom has been the CEO since 2022 and also sits on the Board of Directors. He previously held senior executive roles at GMAC LLC, Northwest Airlines, and America West Airlines.

In 2024, Isom earned $15. 6 million in salary and stock awards, with an estimated net worth of $44 million. He has also stated that 2026 will be the year that American Airlines’ efforts to improve customer service and increase revenue will “start to bear fruit.

The Daily Mail has reached out to American Airlines for comment on the current situation.
