The Magic of Working in the Airline Industry
Being part of the airline industry means being a part of something extraordinary. While there is certainly routine involved in the daily tasks, there are also many moments that can be described as nothing short of “wow.
Elizabeth Sasser ’19, daughter of retired United pilot Jim Sasser ’82, shares her appreciation for the magic of flying. As a window seat person, she always takes the time to look out and appreciate the view. And after years of traveling, she still finds it special and never takes it for granted.
BJ Youngerman ’10 also shares a similar sentiment. While boarding a United flight in the Philippines, he couldn’t help but feel amazed at the company’s ability to connect the world. He acknowledges that there are not many jobs or industries that have such a global impact. As a Davidson student, he was taught to be a global citizen, and being a part of the airline industry allows him to live out that responsibility.
For Sweitzer, who works in an office next to the runways at the Atlanta airport, even the most challenging days have their moments of wonder. As she looks out the window and sees a plane she helped purchase, she can’t help but feel proud and excited to be a part of such an incredible puzzle that comes together thousands of times a day.
Kirk Willingham ’01 shares a heartwarming story of how his job in the airline industry helped him reconnect with an old high school friend. When his friend’s friend, who was the manager for the band Nickel Creek, lost a mandolin during their flight from JFK to LA, Kirk was asked to help track it down. With the help of some connections in the industry, they were able to find and deliver the mandolin in time for the opening show of their tour. As a thank you, Kirk and his friend were able to enjoy a night of music and even hang out with the band backstage. It just goes to show that you never know where your role in the airline industry will lead you.
And let’s not forget about the new airplane smell, which Kirk also mentions. There’s something special about being a part of the delivery of a new aircraft, just like the new car smell we all know and love.
Working in the airline industry is more than just a job – it’s a chance to be a part of something bigger, something magical. Whether it’s the views from the window seat, the ability to connect the world, or the unexpected experiences that come with the job, there’s no denying the excitement and pride that comes with working in this industry. And that’s what keeps people like Elizabeth, BJ, Sweitzer, and Kirk going, even after years in the industry.
