Adelaide Airport Sees Record Growth and Plans for the Future
In 2020, Adelaide Airport had a record-breaking year with 13 major announcements and a significant increase in airline activity. According to Brenton Cox, the managing director of Adelaide Airport, this was the airport’s biggest year yet for airline activity. It is expected that this growth will continue, with more than 9 million passengers projected to pass through the airport in 2026.
Over the Christmas and New Year period, the airport anticipated over 800,000 passengers on more than 6000 flights. This significant growth can be attributed to the introduction of global flights in 2025, which saw a 32% increase in inbound seats and 1. 14 million international passengers arriving at Adelaide Airport – an 18. 3% increase from the previous year.
The state’s international visitor expenditure has also reached a record high of $1. 6 billion, according to the state government. This is expected to continue to grow as new direct flights are introduced. In 2025, all international airlines that were operating in Adelaide prior to the COVID-19 pandemic returned, and some, such as United Airlines, began servicing South Australia for the first time.
Tourism Minister Zoe Bettison expressed her excitement about the new international flights, stating that they are a “massive vote of confidence” in South Australia as a visitor destination and a place to do business. She also mentioned the state’s goal to increase the international market to $2. 2 billion by 2030 and increase weekly international airline seats to 20,200.
Adelaide Airport saw numerous flight announcements in 2025, including the first direct flights between Adelaide and San Francisco with United Airlines. China Eastern also announced a direct route between Shanghai and Adelaide, with a three-times weekly seasonal service starting in mid-2026. Additionally, China Southern will expand its seasonal service from Guangzhou to a year-round service in March 2026. Other returning services included Cathay Pacific, Qantas, and AirAsia, who will now provide direct flights between Denpasar and Adelaide.
Emirates also chose Adelaide as the first destination in its global network to use the ultra-long-range Airbus A350 and introduced its new Premium Economy cabin. By mid-2026, Adelaide Airport will be serviced by 13 international airlines from 12 international locations, including Indonesia AirAsia, Air New Zealand, United Airlines, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Fiji Airways, Jetstar, China Southern Airlines, Emirates, Qantas, Cathay Pacific, and China Eastern Airlines.
