Survivors Reflect on Delta Air Lines Flight 4819 Crash Landing

On February 17, 2025, a Delta Air Lines flight operated by Endeavor Air crashed upon landing at Pearson International Airport in Mississauga. The incident, which involved 76 passengers and four crew members, resulted in a fiery crash that left the plane’s landing gear broken and the aircraft flipped over. However, miraculously, all onboard survived, with 21 people taken to the hospital for injuries.

One survivor, John Nelson, recalls the harrowing experience of the crash. As the plane descended, he noticed that it was coming in at an abnormally high speed. Moments later, the plane hit the ground with such force that it broke the landing gear, causing it to slide, flip, and burst into flames. Nelson describes the experience as being like “in a washer,” and remembers crashing onto the plane’s ceiling after unbuckling his seatbelt.

Another survivor, Nate Richie, also recalls the terrifying moments during and after the crash. He remembers the chaos and confusion onboard, with passengers screaming and crying as they hung upside down from their seats. Richie also recalls having dark thoughts and seeing memories of his family play out before him.

The incident has had a lasting impact on the survivors, both physically and mentally. Nelson suffered injuries including a torn retina, neck and disk injuries, and numbness in his fingers. Richie was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury, in addition to neck and spine injuries. Both survivors have sought therapy and are taking medication to deal with the psychological effects of the crash.

The survivors are also seeking legal action against Delta Air Lines and Endeavor Air, claiming that the crash was preventable and that the pilots were landing the plane too fast and recklessly. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is still investigating the incident, and a final report has yet to be released.

One year later, the survivors are still dealing with the aftermath of the crash. Nelson and Richie both express disappointment in the lack of communication and support from Delta Air Lines, and are seeking an apology for the traumatic experience and lasting impact on their lives. They hope that the TSB’s eventual report will lead to changes in airline safety regulations to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. For now, the survivors continue to reflect on the crash that changed their lives and caused them physical and emotional pain.
