Denver International Airport Ground Stop Causes Delays and Cancellations for Delta and United Airlines

On Wednesday, Denver International Airport (DEN) experienced a major disruption due to high winds and a red flag warning issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The ground stop, which lasted for several hours, resulted in delays and cancellations for flights operated by Delta and United Airlines.

Ground Stop Ordered for DEN Due to High Wind Warning

The FAA issued a ground stop for DEN on Wednesday evening due to high winds reaching hurricane-level speeds in the area. The warning was also accompanied by red flag warnings throughout Colorado’s Front Range. The ground stop, which lasted until 9 pm, was necessary to ensure the safety of all flights and passengers.

According to the National Weather Service, wind gusts in the area had the potential to reach between 60 and 100 mph, with some gusts even reaching 100 mph. These extreme winds also caused power outages, property damage, and downed power lines, affecting over 100,000 people and resulting in school closures.

FAA Issues Warning for Other Major Hubs in the United States

The FAA also warned of potential weather issues for other major hubs in the United States, including Boston, Dallas, Newark, and other hotspots. This warning could potentially impact flights at these airports in the coming days.

Delays and Cancellations for DEN

Despite the ground stop, DEN only had 254 delays for departing flights, affecting 27% of all its flights. For incoming flights, there were 219 delays, impacting 23% of all flights. In comparison, London Heathrow Airport had 338 delays, impacting almost half of its departing flights. Dubai International Airport also experienced significant disruptions, with 414 delays, affecting 59% of departing flights.

United Airlines Saw Increase in Flight Disruptions

As United Airlines operates the most flights out of DEN, the airline saw an increase in flight disruptions due to the ground stop. United finished second worldwide for delays, with 521 delays and 15 cancellations, affecting 18% of its total flights. This was a significant change from their recent performance, where they have often trailed other major U. S. carriers in flight disruptions.

Other Major U. S.

Southwest Airlines had the most delays for the day, with 729 delays and nine cancellations. American Airlines placed third, with 493 delays and four cancellations. Delta Air Lines, which had experienced previous setbacks earlier in the week, saw a significant improvement with only 419 delays, affecting 12% of their flights.

No Major Delays or Cancellations Reported for Thursday

As of early Thursday morning, there are no major delays or cancellations reported at DEN or other major airports. However, travelers are advised to check with their respective airlines for any potential disruptions due to weather or other factors.
