Southwest Airlines Fined but U. S.

The U. S. Department of Transportation has waived part of a fine imposed on Southwest Airlines after the company canceled numerous flights during a winter storm in 2022. This settlement, reached by the Biden administration in 2023, saw Southwest agree to a $140 million civil penalty for violating consumer protection laws. Although most of this money went towards compensating travelers, the airline also agreed to pay $35 million to the U. S. Treasury in three installments. However, the last installment of $11 million was waived in an order issued by the Transportation Department on Friday. The department has acknowledged Southwest’s efforts to improve its on-time performance and invest in network operations.

FAA Launches Investigation into U. S.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation into whether U. S. airlines complied with an emergency order to reduce flights at 40 major airports during the recent government shutdown. The FAA warned airlines on Monday that they could face fines of up to $75,000 for each flight that exceeded the mandated reductions, which ranged from 3% to 6%. The 43-day shutdown, which began on October 1, resulted in significant delays as unpaid air traffic controllers were unable to work. The FAA has stated that the flight cuts were necessary to maintain safety. More than 10,000 flights were canceled during this period.
