Long Island Airports Receive Over $8.
Long Island’s airports are set to receive a major boost with over $8. 7 million in federal funding for facility and equipment upgrades. This is part of a larger $66 million funding for 22 airports across New York State, aimed at enhancing safety, tourism, and economic activity.
The funding was awarded through the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Airport Improvement Program and Airport Infrastructure Grant Program. U. S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced the funding in a news release, highlighting the importance of airports as gateways for commerce and tourism.
According to Senator Schumer, “New York’s airports are a gateway for commerce and our tourism industry, and vital connectors for residents and visitors. ” He further added, “This $66+ million in federal funding will help our airports invest in key safety upgrades and modernization efforts.
Senator Gillibrand also emphasized the significance of the funding, stating that it will provide a safe, reliable, and comfortable passenger experience for everyone traveling through New York.
Experts also stress the crucial role of local airports in driving economic activity through business travel, cargo transport, and access to national and international markets. Additionally, airports contribute to the tourism sector by serving as entry points for travelers, leading to increased spending on accommodations, dining, and entertainment, and generating tax revenue.
Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma will receive the largest share of the funding, with over $3. 8 million allocated for perimeter fence reconstruction and other security enhancements. The airport will also receive over $2 million for taxiway reconstruction and more than $351,000 for glycol treatment system reconstruction.
Other Long Island airports receiving funding include Elizabeth Field Airport on Fishers Island, which will receive over $924,000 for runway lighting and signage reconstruction and $277,000 for runway precision approach path indicator renovation. Republic Airport in Farmingdale is set to receive over $829,000 for the construction of a new aircraft rescue and firefighting building. Brookhaven Airport in Shirley will also receive over $416,000 for runway renovations.
