New Terminal Opens at Watertown International Airport, Boosting Tourism and Economic Activity

The North Country had reason to celebrate on Friday with the opening of a brand new, state-of-the-art terminal at the Watertown International Airport. This milestone marks a significant step forward for the region, with officials touting the terminal as a key driver of tourism, economic activity, and improved travel experiences for residents and visitors alike.

The 25,000-square-foot terminal is part of a larger airport redevelopment project, made possible by a $28 million award from Governor Kathy Hochul’s Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition. Watertown International is just one of nine upstate airports to receive funding through this initiative, which aims to promote and accelerate investments in commercial airports across the state.

In her statement, Governor Hochul emphasized the impact of investing in airports on local communities, saying, “By investing in airports, we are putting upstate communities on the runway toward economic prosperity and better quality of life. ” She also highlighted the importance of the new terminal for the North Country, which is a popular destination for tourists and home to Fort Drum, a major military installation.

According to a recent report, Watertown International Airport generates over $29. 4 million in annual economic activity. This is expected to increase with the completion of the terminal renovation, which includes a spacious lobby, modern ticketing and baggage claim areas, expanded waiting areas, a dedicated car rental counter, and a passenger jet bridge for direct access to planes. The terminal also boasts new elevators, escalators, and bathrooms for added convenience and comfort.

Grant Sussey, director of aviation, expressed excitement about the improvements to the airport, stating, “We are really enhancing the customer experience through the passenger waiting area, the jet bridge, and the amenities here. It’s becoming a fantastic airport that can support not only our current needs, but also those in the future.

The next phase of the redevelopment project will focus on the original terminal, which sits adjacent to the new one. The plan is to transform this into a restaurant, offices, and classroom/event spaces, with a connector joining the two buildings. This part of the project is estimated to cost around $33 million and is expected to be completed by spring 2026.

The New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez also shared her enthusiasm for the new terminal, stating, “This new terminal in Watertown will help create a fabulous gateway to the North Country and its many beautiful attractions, providing a welcoming environment for passengers and giving them plenty of reasons to come back again and again. ” With the completion of this project, Watertown International Airport is poised to become a premier travel hub, further boosting the region’s tourism and economic growth.
