US Airlines Prepare for Severe Winter Storm Disruptions
As a winter storm threatens to bring heavy snow, sleet, and ice across two dozen states, major US airlines have rolled out travel waivers to mitigate potential disruptions and assist affected travelers. Delta Air Lines has warned of potential flight disruptions in the Southern Plains and Southeast, including their hub in Atlanta, and is providing fee-free changes for eligible customers who adjust their travel within the carrier’s waiver terms. American Airlines has expanded similar flexibility across their network, which includes major hubs such as Dallas-Fort Worth and Charlotte. United Airlines has issued a waiver for the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions, as well as parts of the Carolinas and Ohio Valley, allowing affected customers to change their travel plans without incurring additional fees or fare differences. JetBlue has focused their waiver on Northeast airports and is waiving change and cancel fees for customers traveling to and from 11 cities. Frontier Airlines will provide refunds for flights canceled or delayed for more than three and six hours for domestic and international flights, respectively. Spirit Airlines is waiving modification charges and fare differences for travel between January 23 and 25 in 13 cities.
The airlines are encouraging travelers to plan ahead and make necessary changes to their itineraries as soon as possible. As the storm advances, they expect to see ripple effects and delays in airports across the country. Hopper, a travel booking app, has already reported a 17% increase in travelers adding Disruption Assistance to their trips for this upcoming weekend.
