The Watertown International Airport in Hounsfield, New York is seeking donations from the community to support Transportation Security Administration (TSA) workers who have been working without pay for over 30 days. The partial government shutdown has left many government employees, including TSA workers, without a paycheck as lawmakers continue to debate funding.

Despite the challenging circumstances, airport director Grant Sussey reports that TSA employees are still showing up for work and maintaining operations at the checkpoint. However, after reaching the 30-day mark, the airport is reaching out to the community for support. The airport is accepting both perishable and non-perishable food items, but gift cards of any amount are preferred.

According to Sussey, gas and grocery store gift cards are especially helpful as employees struggle to cover essential expenses during the shutdown. Additionally, gift cards to local restaurants are also in high demand. These donations will not only help employees financially, but also show them that their hard work is appreciated and valued by the community.

The situation is even more dire on a national level, as some TSA officers have called in sick or resigned due to the uncertainty of when they will receive their next paycheck. TSA has even warned that some airports may have to close if Congress does not come to a resolution soon.

In a heartwarming display of support, travelers Kalli Loveland and Jonah Freschett donated to the cause before departing for their vacation in Aruba. Loveland expressed her gratitude for being able to enjoy her vacation while also helping TSA workers and their families. Donations can be dropped off at the airport’s FBO Business Center seven days a week from 8 a. m. to 4 p. m.

The airport is asking for the community’s support during this difficult time for TSA workers. As the shutdown continues, any contribution, big or small, can make a difference in helping these dedicated employees make ends meet. Let’s come together to show our appreciation for their hard work and dedication to keeping our airports safe.
