Vertical Aerospace, a UK-based technology company, has recently unveiled its new Valo electric flying aircraft in New York City. This aircraft, which is scheduled to be rolled out in US cities by 2029, is designed to meet airliner-level safety standards and can fly up to 100 miles at a top speed of 150 mph with zero operating emissions.
The Valo aircraft features a premium cabin with four seats, panoramic windows, ample personal space, and a spacious luggage capacity. It is the first certification-ready aircraft from Vertical Aerospace and promises a comfortable and environmentally-friendly travel experience.
Vertical Aerospace has partnered with vertical flight company Bristow and Skyports Infrastructure to plan the routes for Valo in the US. This includes airport transfers between Skyports’ Downtown Skyport in Manhattan and major regional airports. The aircraft may also be used for game-day travel from Downtown Skyport to MetLife Stadium, aerial sightseeing tours, and weekend connections to East Hampton Airport.
In addition, Valo aircrafts could potentially provide cross-town urban transfers between Downtown Skyport and other heliports, as well as emergency services to hospitals. This showcases the versatility and potential uses of electric aviation in the US.
Stuart Simpson, the CEO of Vertical Aerospace, expressed excitement over the US Valo tour, stating that it builds on the momentum from their London unveiling and a successful year of testing, partnerships, and certification. He also mentioned that New York is a natural next step to explore the possibilities of electric aviation in urban and regional travel, with safety, certification, and real-world operations being their top priorities.
Vertical Aerospace has already established partnerships with Bristow and Skyports for planned flying taxi routes from Canary Wharf to major transport hubs in the UK. Duncan Walker, the CEO of Skyports Infrastructure, emphasized the importance of evaluating potential use cases around Downtown Skyport, which demonstrates how their infrastructure can support a wide range of journeys, from airports and events to leisure and urban connections, as electric aviation continues to develop.
The Valo aircraft’s arrival in New York marks the first opportunity for US investors, customers, partners, and the public to experience the aircraft, which was put on display on Friday, January 23. However, Vertical’s operations in US cities are subject to regulatory approval, which is expected to be obtained by 2028.
