Seasonal Flights Between Glasgow and New York Extended Into Autumn
United Airlines has announced that their seasonal flights between Glasgow Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport in New York will now run until October 24. This is a one-month extension from the original end date of September 23. The flights, which mark United’s return to Glasgow after two years, were first announced in October of last year and are set to begin on May 9.
In an interview with The Herald, Kam Jandu, the CEO of AGS Airports, expressed hopes for the United Airlines service to eventually become year-round and to use a wide-body jet. Mr.Jandu stated that making the New York route year-round and operating it on a wider aircraft is a priority for the airport’s transatlantic ambitions.
The United flights will be operated by a narrow-body Boeing 737 MAX-8 aircraft. Mr.Jandu explained that the demand for these flights is due to Glasgow’s position as the largest city in Scotland and its significant catchment area in the Central Belt region. This allowed the airport to attract United by highlighting the fact that Glasgow is one of the few unserved long-haul markets on the east coast of the US.
In addition to the United flights, Glasgow Airport is currently in talks with American Airlines about potential flights to Philadelphia. Mr.Jandu expressed hopes for these discussions to gain traction and for the possibility of a service starting in 2027 or 2028. He also stated that American Airlines is aware of the market and opportunity in Glasgow and that it is on their list of potential routes, with the only question being when it will reach the top of the list.
Lastly, Mr.Jandu mentioned that the airport is also in conversation with Delta, although to a lesser extent, about potential routes from Glasgow. With the success of the United flights and the potential addition of American Airlines, Glasgow Airport is looking to expand its transatlantic offerings and become a key player in connecting Scotland with the US.
