United Airlines recently announced their record-breaking on-time performance at Newark Liberty International Airport this past summer. The airline reported that over six million passengers flew on-time through EWR, making it their best operational summer at the airport. In addition, United plans to expand their routes to serve over 160 destinations from New Jersey.
United also plans to hire 2,500 new employees and introduce sustainable aviation fuel. This news was announced at an event on September 16th at Newark Liberty International Airport, where United CEO Scott Kirby credited the efforts of federal officials, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and United employees for the airport’s success.
Earlier this year, EWR faced challenges with air traffic control staffing, technology outages, and runway construction, resulting in delays and cancellations. However, with the help of various agencies and leaders, the airport has bounced back and is now operating better than ever. The Federal Aviation Administration has tentatively limited flights out of EWR to 72 per hour until next summer to ease congestion.
Kirby also noted that United flights out of EWR had a better on-time performance this summer compared to flights operated by other airlines at JFK or LGA airports. This success is attributed to the efforts of the 14,000 employees that United employs in the region, including pilots and flight attendants.
In the coming months, United plans to expand its services to popular cities and introduce new routes from EWR. The airline currently employs over 14,000 people in the region and aims to hire an additional 2,500 employees by the end of next year. They will also be the first airline to bring sustainable aviation fuel to EWR.
Governor Phil Murphy praised United’s continued investment in Newark Airport, which he believes will serve as a significant economic driver for the region and create thousands of new jobs. FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford also acknowledged the efforts being made at the federal level to improve the airport’s performance, including implementing a temporary satellite backup system and increasing controller staff.
United CEO Scott Kirby expressed his confidence that the reliability and on-time performance of EWR will only continue to improve as the FAA and Department of Transportation implement their plans for increased staffing and improved technology. He also thanked Governor Murphy for his partnership in supporting the region’s transportation infrastructure.
In conclusion, United’s record-breaking on-time performance at EWR this summer is a testament to the hard work and dedication of all those involved in ensuring the airport’s success. With plans for expansion and the introduction of sustainable aviation fuel, EWR is poised to continue as a top destination for domestic and international travelers.
