United Airlines is ramping up its transatlantic offerings for summer 2026, adding new nonstop routes to emerging European destinations and solidifying its position as the largest U. S. carrier across the pond. These new routes, which include Split, Bari, Glasgow, and Santiago de Compostela, will be exclusively operated by United among U. S. airlines.

The expansion is in response to the growing demand for less traditional European destinations, with a focus on underserved areas. For the first time ever, United will offer nonstop service (three weekly flights) to Croatia’s Dalmatian coast with its new route to Split. In addition, the airline will be the only U. S. carrier serving southern Italy’s Puglia region with four weekly flights to Bari. Daily service to Scotland’s largest city, Glasgow, will also be introduced, along with three weekly flights to the historic pilgrimage destination of Santiago de Compostela in northwest Spain. United will also launch a new daily service between Washington, D. C. and Reykjavik, offering the only capital-to-capital connection on this route with lie-flat business class seats.

During peak summer, United plans to operate up to 210 daily flights between the U. S. and Europe, with nearly 770 weekly roundtrips to 36 European destinations, including Greenland. What sets this expansion apart is that 14 of these destinations are not served by any other U. S. network carrier, showcasing United’s focus on differentiation.

This expansion is an extension of United’s record-breaking 2025 expansion, with several seasonal services returning earlier or at higher frequency. These include Faro, Madeira, Palermo, Bilbao, and Nuuk. The airline is also continuing its service to Ulaanbaatar via Tokyo, demonstrating its commitment to diversifying its network beyond Europe.

United cites the increasing interest in coastal, cultural, and “off-the-beaten-path” destinations as the driving force behind this expansion. This shift in demand has led to a change in route planning, with airlines prioritizing unique destinations that can command higher prices and avoid direct competition.

By offering exclusive routes coupled with high-frequency service, United is solidifying its position as a dominant player in the transatlantic market. This strategic move not only caters to the growing demand for premium leisure travel, but also captures niche international traffic flows.

As summer approaches, United is betting on the fact that travelers will continue to seek out new experiences in destinations that were once considered secondary, but are now gaining popularity.
