United Airlines is ceasing flights from Washington Dulles to Dakar and from Newark to Stockholm Arlanda. The decision is not surprising given recent changes in the market. The Star Alliance member has been contacted for comment, but all carriers experience route changes and United is no exception. While the airline is known for introducing service to new and unique destinations, it will be ending its flights to Dakar and Stockholm.
United From Dulles To Dakar
United has been flying to the Senegalese capital since May 2025, marking its introduction to the West African nation. However, South African Airways previously operated this route between 2006 and 2019, and Air Senegal had planned to fly via JFK before switching to Baltimore. Currently, neither African carrier offers flights to the US. United has always used a Boeing 767-300ER for this route and had planned to operate three times a week on a year-round basis in 2026. However, the last flight will depart from Dulles on March 4. While routes can take time to develop, early data shows that United only filled 65% of available seats from May to July 2025, which is low for a new route. In fact, senior network planner Behramjee Ghadially stated in 2024 that the route would probably not last a year. United competes with Delta, which operates up to five times a week from New York JFK using a 767-300ER. Additionally, Air Transat will be offering the first-ever service from Canada to Dakar starting in June 2026.
United From Newark To Stockholm
United has been operating this route from Newark since it inherited it from Continental. The route covers 3,415 nautical miles and has always been seasonal. However, the operating period has diminished in recent years, with only 88 departures in 2025 compared to 128 in 2019. In 2026, United planned to operate a daily service from June 4 to September 6 using a 176-seat 757-200. However, all flights have now been removed from the schedule. This was set to be the longest scheduled passenger 757 service from North America.
