Travelers are facing higher costs for checked luggage due to increased fuel prices caused by the Iran war. Airlines such as United Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and Southwest Airlines have all raised their baggage fees. However, besides these additional fees, passengers also need to be aware of the maximum weight limit for checked bags.
Recently, an investigation revealed that the scales used at a major United Airlines hub, Newark Liberty International Airport, were producing inaccurate results. It was found that these scales were giving incorrect weights 27% of the time, mostly at Terminal B where many international United Airlines flights arrive. This is a major concern for travelers as an overweight bag can result in costly fees.
New York City officials conduct annual tests at LaGuardia Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport, where the rate of error is much lower. LaGuardia’s last inspection found all 209 scales to be working correctly, while at JFK, only two of 670 scales malfunctioned and were quickly repaired.
On the other hand, Newark Liberty International Airport has not been inspected by the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs since 2023. Out of 384 scales, 105 failed inspection, meaning over a quarter of the scales were giving false readings. This can result in passengers being overcharged for their luggage, which can mean significant costs for the average traveler.
But how much do airlines charge for overweight bags? For domestic flights, United Airlines charges an additional $100 for bags over 50 pounds and $200 for bags over 70 pounds. Delta Air Lines and American Airlines have similar fees, while JetBlue charges $150 for a bag over the limit. International flights can incur even higher fees, with United Airlines charging $200 for an overweight bag and up to $400 for a bag over 70 pounds on certain routes.
In addition to these baggage fees, airlines have also recently increased the cost of checking luggage. United Airlines raised their checked bag fees by $10, while American Airlines and Delta Air Lines increased their prices by $10 and $5 respectively. These fees apply to flights within the U. S. , Canada, Mexico, and Latin America.
With the added costs of baggage fees and the possibility of being overcharged due to inaccurate scales, travelers need to be more mindful than ever when packing for their trips. It is important to stay within the weight limits and consider investing in a luggage scale to avoid any unexpected fees.
