Major North American Airlines Continue to Operate Between Canada and the United States Despite Tensions

In light of current tensions between Canada and the United States, major North American airlines are still providing flights between the two countries. However, many airlines have scaled back their operations, with Air Canada cancelling its Jacksonville route for Canadian snowbirds this winter. WestJet has also shifted its focus to Europe and has cancelled multiple flights to the United States, citing current trends.

One airline that has never flown to Canada since its establishment is Southwest Airlines. Despite speculation, there has been no official statement from the airline explaining their decision to not fly north of the border. Experts believe that Southwest’s interests lie elsewhere, as they continue to expand their international routes.

Southwest Airlines Refuses to Fly to Canada

While most major U. S. airlines, such as American Airlines, United, Delta Air Lines, and JetBlue, operate flights to Canada, Southwest Airlines has never included Canada in its network. As other airlines have reduced their capacity, Southwest’s growth strategy for the 2025 season includes a 1% increase in capacity compared to 2024. This slow and steady approach has been the airline’s game plan, with a focus on domestic travel within the United States.

Why Hasn’t Southwest Expanded to Canada?

Experts believe that Southwest may be deterred by the complexities of entering the Canadian market, such as strict aviation rules and potential logistical issues and increased costs. Additionally, many major U. S. airlines have codesharing agreements with Canadian airlines, leaving Southwest with limited collaboration options north of the border.

Southwest Continues to Expand Internationally, Adding New Flights to Caribbean Destinations

Despite not flying to Canada, Southwest is expanding its international service to popular vacation destinations. Just last week, the airline announced its plans to add St. Thomas as a new destination, making it the ninth island destination in the Atlantic Basin served by Southwest. The airline also has routes to Belize and multiple destinations in both Costa Rica and Mexico.

American Airlines Surprises Canadians with Plans for Codeshare Agreement with Porter Airlines

While other U. S. airlines are scaling back on Canadian travel, American Airlines has caught Canadians by surprise with their proposal for a codeshare agreement with Porter Airlines. This collaboration would make it easier for passengers to book and check-in for flights on both airlines with a single itinerary. In the meantime, Porter Airlines has added new flights and enhanced service to destinations in the United States.

The Future of Southwest Airlines in Canada

It remains to be seen if Southwest Airlines will ever expand to Canada. As the airline continues to make changes, such as removing the free bag perk, anything is possible. In the meantime, other major airlines are strengthening their bond with Canada, while Southwest focuses on expanding to other international destinations.
