A major breakthrough in the field of hypersonic jet travel has been achieved by Venus Aerospace, with the successful test launch of their Rotating Detonation Rocket Engine (RDRE) from Spaceport America in New Mexico. This engine technology has the potential to enable planes to travel at four to six times the speed of sound, making long-distance flights comparable to a trip to a neighboring country.

The RDRE has been in development for five years and has gone through rigorous testing in controlled conditions before its first test flight outside of a lab. The CEO and co-founder of Venus Aerospace, Sarah ‘Sassie’ Duggleby, expressed her excitement about this milestone, stating that they have proven the technology works in the air, not just in simulations or the lab.

The ultimate goal of Venus Aerospace is to develop the Stargazer M4, a reusable passenger aircraft that can travel at Mach 4 and fly close to the edge of space. This would significantly reduce travel time, with a potential day trip from San Francisco to Tokyo taking only two hours instead of the current 13 hours.

The key difference between this engine and traditional rockets is its efficiency, which allows it to carry less fuel. This has been compared to lighting a fire in a wax fireplace, where the challenge is to prevent the wax from melting. The team has found a solution to this by continuously circulating ice water through the engine to pull out the heat.
