Snowstorm Causes Delays and Congestion at JFK Airport

On Sunday, a snowstorm struck New York City, leaving almost five inches of snow at JFK Airport and causing significant delays for passengers. As a result of the snow and ice, travelers were stuck waiting on the tarmac for hours after their flights landed.

The National Weather Service reported that by 1 p. m, 4. 6 inches of snow had fallen at JFK, which was two inches more than at Newark and LaGuardia airports. Additionally, temperatures dropped to the low teens overnight, making travel conditions even more difficult.

Flight data from Flightradar24 revealed that incoming planes experienced lengthy delays before being able to park at their designated gates. For example, Delta Air Lines Flight 5052 from Charlotte arrived at JFK almost three hours behind schedule and then took an additional three and a half hours to reach the gate. Similarly, American Airlines passengers from Miami faced a two-hour delay before departure, two circles during approach, and over an hour of taxiing upon arrival at JFK.

Air traffic control advisories showed that the airport’s arrival rate was dramatically reduced to allow for snow and ice removal. One advisory around 10 a. m. warned of an average delay of over three hours and some passengers experiencing delays of up to five hours. As congestion increased, Delta flights into JFK were temporarily halted from taking off.

In response to the delays and congestion, Delta released a statement apologizing for the inconvenience and emphasizing the importance of safety. They also noted that winter weather conditions were the primary cause of the delays. However, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates JFK, Newark, and LaGuardia, did not provide a statement.

According to FlightAware data, over 1,400 flights in the greater New York City area were delayed or canceled, with JFK and Newark experiencing the greatest impact. Over half of the flights at JFK and Newark were delayed, while about one-fifth were canceled. At LaGuardia, 40% of flights were canceled.

In conclusion, the snowstorm on Sunday caused significant disruptions at JFK Airport, resulting in delays and congestion for travelers. Despite the efforts of airlines and airport authorities, the winter weather conditions proved challenging and affected the travel plans of many passengers.
