The Saratoga County Airport has recently undergone a major upgrade, bringing new businesses and modern facilities to the decades-old facility. The project was largely funded by a $27 million award from Governor Kathy Hochul’s Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition. The total cost of the project was nearly $36 million.
Previously, the airport primarily serviced private aircraft and consisted of a 1940s hangar and a runway. However, the upgrade has transformed the airport into a modern terminal and added a new 20,000 square-foot hangar. On Thursday, State Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez celebrated the completion of the project with a ribbon cutting ceremony.
Dominguez emphasized the airport’s economic impact, stating that “investment follows investment, especially when it comes to transportation. ” She also highlighted the airport’s potential to attract more business and tourism to the area, citing the hundreds of millions of dollars that are spent in the local economy each year. According to data from the state DOT, the airport generated over $9. 7 million in economic activity even before the upgrade. With the new facilities, officials anticipate even greater economic returns in the future.
The completion of the airport is particularly timely, as it coincides with the temporary relocation of the Belmont Stakes to Saratoga Race Course while its usual home undergoes renovations. The New York Racing Association has announced that the third leg of the Triple Crown will return to Saratoga in 2026 once the renovations at Belmont Park are completed.
Saratoga County Board of Supervisors Chair Phil Barrett, a Republican, believes that the upgraded airport will be a valuable asset during the busy track season. He also noted that the airport will have a positive impact on the day-to-day lives of local residents and will continue to drive economic growth in the future.
The construction project created and supported 390 local jobs, according to officials. Capital Region Transportation Council Executive Director Sandra Misiewicz believes that the investment in the airport is worthwhile, even though it will not support commercial flights. She stated that there is a need for increased support for aviation activity, particularly during peak travel times such as the track season. The council will be working with partners in Saratoga County and other transportation agencies to provide additional resources for public transportation, bicycling, and pedestrian transportation.
