Qatar Airways Signs Deal to Purchase 210 Aircraft from Boeing

In a major move for the aviation industry, state-owned airline Qatar Airways has signed a deal to buy 210 aircraft from the United States-based manufacturer Boeing. The agreement, worth $96 billion, was signed in Doha on Wednesday, with the US President Donald Trump and the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in attendance.

The deal includes the purchase of Boeing’s 777X and 787 planes, which will be equipped with GE Aerospace engines. Prior to the signing, Trump had announced that the deal was worth over $200 billion and included 160 planes. However, the White House later clarified the numbers and stated that the agreements signed by the US and Qatar would generate an economic exchange of at least $1.2 trillion.

Qatar Airways Group CEO Badr Mohammed Al-Meer expressed his excitement for the deal, stating that it is a critical step for the airline’s investment in a young and efficient fleet. He also mentioned the company’s record-breaking commercial performance in the past two years and its commitment to delivering unmatched products and customer experiences.

The purchase is a significant boost for Boeing and its largest engine supplier, GE Aerospace, especially as their rival Airbus has faced maintenance issues with their A350 planes, powered by Rolls-Royce engines. The deal also marks the largest widebody engine deal for GE Aerospace, according to the company’s CEO Larry Culp.
