Navi Mumbai Airport Opens to Workers and First-Time Flyers, Marking Major Expansion of Mumbai’s Aviation Capacity
The highly anticipated greenfield Navi Mumbai airport officially opened its doors on Thursday, welcoming construction workers among its first batch of flyers. This marks a significant milestone in Mumbai’s aviation growth and is a crucial step in India’s infrastructure development.
The Adani Group, headed by Chairman Gautam Adani, personally greeted passengers on the inaugural flight and engaged with airport staff, frontline workers, and first-time flyers. In a post on social media, Adani shared a video showcasing the experiences of the first-time flyers and workers on the first flight. He expressed his gratitude to the hardworking individuals who completed the project in record time and highlighted the confidence and progress of India through the smiling faces of the workers.
Excitement filled the air as many first-time flyers shared their experiences and thanked the Adani Group for the opportunity. Some of the workers who were involved in the airport’s construction were also part of the maiden flight.
Mumbai Joins Global Aviation Hubs with Multi-Airport System
With the opening of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), Mumbai now joins other major cities such as London, New York, Moscow, Tokyo, and Shanghai, with multiple airports to meet the increasing demand for air travel. This new airport is designed to create a multi-airport system that will cater to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) for scalability, resilience, and future growth.
Operated by Adani Airports Holdings Limited (AAHL), a subsidiary of Adani Enterprises Limited (AEL), NMIA is one of the largest greenfield airport projects in India. It was built to ease congestion at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA).
Inaugural Day Highlights and Ceremonial Launch
The first commercial flight, IndiGo flight 6E460 from Bengaluru, landed on Thursday at 08:00 hours, receiving a traditional water cannon salute. On its first day of operations, NMIA handled 48 flights to nine domestic destinations, serving over 4,000 passengers. Peak traffic was recorded between 05:00 and 07:00 hours, demonstrating strong early demand and operational readiness, according to NMIA.
After warmly welcoming the first passengers and interacting with airport staff, frontline workers, and first-time flyers, Gautam Adani joined a ceremonial walk through the departure terminal with airport employees, community representatives, and beneficiaries of the Adani Foundation. The launch concluded with a flag-hoisting ceremony led by Param Vir Chakra awardees Captain Bana Singh and Subedar Major Sanjay Kumar, followed by the national anthem.
