Electric Air Taxi Demonstrates Flights in New York City
An electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, developed by Joby Aviation, has successfully completed a series of demonstration flights in New York City. These flights included routes between John F. Kennedy International Airport and multiple heliports in Manhattan.
Joby Aviation, a leading eVTOL company, aims to revolutionize air transportation by providing efficient and environmentally friendly options for urban travel. The company’s recent flights in New York City are a testament to their progress towards this goal.
The flights, which were coordinated with support from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, were conducted as part of the FAA’s eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP). Joby’s routes for the New York market include flights between JFK and Manhattan, with a flight time of under 10 minutes.
JoeBen Bevirt, founder and CEO of Joby Aviation, expressed excitement about the company’s achievements in New York City. “New York is a city that demands better, and we are proud to be part of shaping its future,” he said. “With our quiet, zero operating emissions air taxi service, we are committed to providing a better transportation option for New Yorkers. This week, flying between JFK and Manhattan, we demonstrated the possibilities of the White House-backed eIPP initiative and gave New York a glimpse of what’s to come.
The flights in New York City are part of Joby’s 2026 Electric Skies Tour, which began with successful demonstrations in the San Francisco Bay Area before continuing in New York. The company is currently working towards FAA certification, and their first conforming aircraft has recently completed a successful flight, marking a significant step towards FAA for-credit testing. Additionally, Joby has acquired Blade Air Mobility’s passenger business, providing them with access to existing passenger infrastructure in the New York area.
Joby Aviation’s recent flights in New York City showcase the potential of eVTOL technology to transform urban transportation. With continued progress towards FAA certification and partnerships with established passenger companies, the future of efficient and sustainable air travel is closer than ever.
