Joby Aviation, a company focused on developing all-electric air taxis for commercial passenger service, has successfully completed its first flight between two US airports in California. The flight, which took place between Marina (OAR) and Monterey (MRY) airports, lasted approximately 12 minutes and covered a distance of 10nm. This accomplishment demonstrates the company’s capabilities in safety, operational procedures, air traffic control integration, and progress towards certification.
The flight was conducted in FAA-controlled airspace, operating alongside other aircraft. This marks the first time a piloted electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) air taxi has flown between two public airports. The successful flight also showcased Joby’s ability to conduct mobile flight tests and provide comprehensive ground support operations away from its base.
During the flight, data was collected to provide insights into the human factors involved in operating the aircraft within controlled airspace. The aircraft effectively integrated with other air traffic at Monterey Airport, including managing a holding pattern to accommodate an incoming airliner. This demonstrated the company’s adherence to established air traffic control protocols, similar to those followed by commercial airlines, which is crucial for their ongoing certification process with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Joby Aircraft OEM president Didier Papadopoulos highlighted the significance of this achievement, stating, “For years, our flight testing has validated our aircraft’s capabilities, and we’ve done this across a wide range of environmental conditions. As part of the natural progression of our flight test program, it was time to venture further, and there was no better place to visit first than our neighbours in Monterey.
This successful flight also serves as a demonstration of Joby’s readiness for the commercial market, following their planned acquisition of Blade Air Mobility’s passenger business. The company is currently finalising the assembly of its first aircraft for Type Inspection Authorisation flight testing and plans to initiate flight testing with FAA pilots in early 2026. Upon successful certification, Joby intends to launch its commercial services in major cities such as Los Angeles and New York City.
In addition to their technological advancements, Joby is also gaining recognition for their achievements. They have been nominated for the Airport Technology Excellence Awards, which celebrate innovation, leadership, and impact in the aviation industry. By entering, Joby showcases their achievements, elevates their industry profile, and positions themselves among top leaders driving aviation industry advancements. The awards provide an opportunity for businesses to gain recognition and stand out in the industry.
