The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and JFKIAT have joined forces to introduce a new ‘street market’ initiative at John F. Kennedy International Airport Terminal 4. The program aims to increase local participation in T4 concessions by partnering with diverse and local businesses.
The first two businesses to open under this initiative are Villa Russo Café and Brooklyn Tea & Market. These partnerships mark the first joint-venture between HMSHost and local businesses in T4, after a rigorous selection process.
Villa Russo Café is a Queens-based Italian-American restaurant that originated as a pizzeria in 1954 by Italian immigrants. It has since grown into a successful event and catering business. The café, which is now open in T4, offers a variety of Italian-inspired grab-and-go food made from family recipes. Owner George Russo, a second-generation owner, participated in the Port Authority’s Institute of Concessions as part of the larger JFK redevelopment strategy.
Russo expressed his excitement at the opportunity to bring his family’s culinary traditions to a global market at JFK T4, saying, “To think that my father and uncle started with a small pizzeria in Queens and now our next generation is operating at one of the busiest airports in the country is truly a testament to the American dream.
Brooklyn Tea & Market is the first Black-owned beverage brand to operate in US airports. Founded by Jamila and Alfonso Wright, the brand is known for its focus on wellness and tea education. It offers a wide variety of signature teas, with 11 exclusive options available at their T4 location. The brand, which is rooted in Caribbean heritage, has locations in Brooklyn and Atlanta.
Jamila Wright, co-founder of Brooklyn Tea & Market, expressed her gratitude at being the first Black-owned beverage brand to have a presence in any US airport, saying, “We are honored to be a part of this historic moment and represent what is possible when diverse businesses are given the opportunity to thrive. ” She also commended JFKIAT and HMSHost for prioritizing the importance of diversity and inclusion in their business partnerships.
Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole stated that the goal of the initiative is to reflect the diverse and vibrant character of the region that the airport serves. He hopes that travelers will have the opportunity to experience the rich cultural and culinary offerings of New York and New Jersey throughout their journey.
JFKIAT CEO Roel Huinink echoed this sentiment, stating that the new openings are a testament to their commitment to providing an authentic New York City experience at T4 while also supporting small businesses. He also announced that this is just the beginning of a larger collaboration between JFKIAT and HMSHost to integrate local businesses into T4 concessions.
HMSHost Vice President of Business Development Anthony Alessi expressed his excitement at bringing these two local favorites to T4, stating that they capture the essence and spirit of the JFK community.
