JetBlue Offers “Rescue Fares” to Stranded Spirit Airlines Customers

After a long absence, JetBlue has returned to the Charlotte Douglas International Airport to offer discounted “rescue fares” to travelers who were stranded by the sudden closure of Spirit Airlines.

According to a statement released on Saturday, JetBlue is offering $99 tickets to affected Spirit customers until May 6th. The New York City-based airline described the discounted fares as a way to assist stranded travelers with immediate travel plans.

The closure of Spirit Airlines caused a spike in ticket prices across all airlines as panicked travelers rushed to rebook their flights. Some single tickets even reached prices as high as $500.

In addition to offering “rescue fares,” JetBlue is also expanding its services at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida, which was previously the main hub for Spirit Airlines. The company plans to add daily flights to six new cities, including Charlotte, North Carolina, where JetBlue had previously pulled out due to low customer demand.

JetBlue CEO Joanna Geraghty stated, “Our focus is on stepping up in the near term by adding service, maintaining connectivity, and keeping fares competitive, so customers can continue to travel with confidence. ” She also mentioned that JetBlue will be extending job opportunities to qualified Spirit employees who were impacted by the sudden shutdown.

Spirit Airlines announced on Saturday that it was winding down its operations “effective immediately” after failing to secure a $500 million bailout from the federal government. All future flights have been cancelled and customer service is no longer available.

While Spirit has promised refunds to affected customers, they are not offering assistance in booking alternative flights with other airlines. Those who booked through third-party vendors will have to seek refunds from them.

This is not the first time Spirit Airlines has declared bankruptcy, but this time they stated that the rising oil prices made it impossible for them to stay afloat. JetBlue had previously cited a lack of customer interest when they pulled out of the Charlotte airport in 2024.

In conclusion, JetBlue’s “rescue fares” offer a much-needed solution for stranded Spirit customers and their expanded services aim to fill the void left by the airline’s sudden shutdown.
