The Salt Lake City International Airport is undergoing major changes with the construction of a new airport. The project has been ongoing for the past twelve years and is expected to be completed by 2026 with a remaining budget of $370 million.

The project has faced a number of challenges, including the passing of director Michael Williams, who was a key figure in the project’s development. Williams’ passing has only reinforced the team’s commitment to completing the project in his honor.

The new airport will feature a central terminal building and two concourses, with a total of 94 gates. The first phase of the project, which was completed in 2020, included the central terminal building and the western sections of Concourses A and B. The second phase, completed in 2023, involved the demolition of the old airport, completion of the east portion of Concourse A, and the beginning of work on the Central Tunnel.

The third phase, which is currently wrapping up, includes the completion of the Central Tunnel and a plaza for Concourse B. The final phase, scheduled for completion in 2026, will add 16 gates to the eastern portion of Concourse B.

The team has faced numerous challenges throughout the project, including an earthquake, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the unique geological conditions of building on an ancient lakebed. The project has also integrated artwork throughout the airport, including pieces by artist Gordon Huether.

The project has been divided into four phases, with overlapping delivery of components. The team has utilized a combination of construction manager-at-risk contracts to oversee different aspects of the redevelopment, including rental car facilities, the central terminal, concourses, and airfield paving.

One of the major challenges of the project was the demolition of the old airport, which was completed in just six months. The resulting material was repurposed, with 85% being reused on site. The construction also faced unique challenges due to the airport’s location on a seismically active former lake bed. Measures were taken to stabilize the ground, including drilling hundreds of 3-ft-diameter holes and filling them with small stones.

The construction of the new airport also involved the use of innovative techniques such as cut-and-cover excavation and the construction of a Central Tunnel, which includes a unique membrane sculpture and an ambient sound experience.

The project also includes a number of ancillary projects, such as a baggage handling expansion and the construction of airline lounges. The team has worked closely with artists to incorporate artwork into the airport’s design, creating a unique and visually appealing experience for passengers.

The new airport is set to open in phases, with the final gates opening in October of this year and the remaining gates opening in October of 2026. The airport is expected to accommodate the growing number of passengers traveling through Salt Lake City with its modern design and improved efficiency.
