Glasgow Airport: A Hub for Growth and Connectivity

The chief executive of AGS Airports, Kam Jandu, is anticipating a significant increase in passenger numbers this year following the successful acquisition of new flights over the past eight months.

Mr.Jandu spoke to The Herald on the first anniversary of his appointment, emphasizing the strength of the “toolkit” available to promote Glasgow Airport. He noted that the airport has secured 26 new routes and services in just eight months, including the recent announcement of new flights to Zurich by Swiss airline Edelweiss.

In 2020, Glasgow Airport saw 8. 2 million passengers, a slight increase from 2019. Mr.Jandu has set ambitious goals to reach 17 million passengers annually by 2040. The current projection is for 8. 8 million passengers by 2026, which would mark a full recovery from the pandemic.

AGS Airports, which owns Aberdeen and Southampton airports in addition to Glasgow, was acquired by AviAlliance in January 2020. As part of a £350 million investment in the three UK airports, AviAlliance plans to transform the main terminal building at Glasgow Airport.

Mr.Jandu expressed his excitement about the investment, stating that much of the current functionality at the airport is outdated and in need of improvement. He also highlighted the potential for new routes and services, particularly in the transatlantic market.

Glasgow Airport has already secured new flights to Newark Liberty International Airport by United Airlines, and discussions are ongoing with American Airlines for potential flights to Philadelphia. Mr.Jandu stated that these airlines see the potential in Glasgow and are considering adding it to their routes.

In addition to transatlantic routes, Glasgow Airport is also eyeing opportunities in China, India, and Pakistan. Mr.Jandu revealed that talks are underway with multiple airlines and government representatives in these countries, with the potential for direct flights to Mumbai, Delhi, Lahore, and Karachi in 2027 and 2028.

While focusing on expanding long-haul routes, Mr.Jandu also highlighted the importance of short-haul flights within Europe. He noted that there are still destinations that have not fully recovered from the pandemic and others that lack sufficient frequency for business travelers.

Glasgow Airport is also working to encourage people within its catchment area to use their local airport instead of traveling to Edinburgh. Mr.Jandu believes that this will be crucial in building the airport’s connectivity and has implemented targeted marketing efforts to reach potential passengers.

Ultimately, Mr.Jandu sees Glasgow Airport as a gateway to the Highlands and is committed to making it a world-class airport that the entire community can be proud of. With AviAlliance’s plans for a comprehensive transformation and the airport’s strong toolkit for marketing, Glasgow Airport is well-positioned for growth and continued success in the future.
