New York City is not known for its free offerings, making it all the more noteworthy when one does come along. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, in partnership with CUNY Aviation Center at York College, has recently launched a new scholarship program tied to the redevelopment of John F. Kennedy International Airport. This scholarship will cover 100% of tuition and fees for a two-year master’s degree in aviation management for eligible New Yorkers.

Known as the JFK Redevelopment Opportunity Scholarship, the program is specifically designed for residents living in the communities surrounding the airport. It serves as both a workforce pipeline and a community investment, as the Port Authority looks to train the next generation of aviation professionals in the neighborhoods closest to JFK, which is currently undergoing a multibillion-dollar transformation.

According to Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole, “With the historic redevelopment at JFK, it is critical that the Port Authority continue to invest in talent from the surrounding communities by enabling local students access to opportunities that a new, world-class airport will present. ” This unprecedented $50 billion investment in new airport facilities presents an equally unprecedented opportunity for the residents of the communities surrounding JFK.

The scholarship will cover up to two years of tuition and fees for 20 graduate students pursuing aviation-related master’s degrees at CUNY Aviation Center at York College in Jamaica. The curriculum focuses on aviation finance, safety management, airport planning, airline operations, global logistics, and strategic marketing. In addition to covering tuition and fees, the scholarship also provides access to paid internships and fellowships with airport operators and the Port Authority itself.

Furthermore, another scholarship is available for 10 high school seniors pursuing bachelor’s degrees in aviation or aeronautics at Vaughn College in East Elmhurst. This scholarship will cover full tuition and fees for up to four years.

However, there are certain requirements for applicants. They must have a bachelor’s degree, a minimum GPA of 3. 0, and strong recommendations. They must also reside in one of several ZIP codes in southeast Queens and nearby Nassau County communities. This is not a citywide opportunity, but rather compensation for living in close proximity to the airport.

As the aviation industry rebounds and airport infrastructure expands, there is a growing employment gap. Millions of jobs are expected to open globally in the coming decades, and programs like this aim to ensure that these job opportunities go to local residents.

Applications for the fall 2026 semester are currently open, with deadlines approaching in early summer. For more information and to apply, please visit the program’s website. This is an excellent opportunity for eligible New Yorkers to pursue a fully funded master’s degree in aviation management and become a part of the exciting transformation taking place at JFK International Airport.
