New Restrictions Prohibit Business Aviation Flights at 12 Major US Airports

The National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) has issued a warning about the significant operational impacts that will result from new federal restrictions, effective Monday, that effectively prohibit business aviation flights at 12 of the busiest airports in the United States. These restrictions were announced through a series of NOTAMs (Notice to Airmen) and will have a widespread impact on the general aviation (GA) industry.

The airports affected by these new restrictions include Atlanta, Chicago O’Hare, Dallas Fort Worth, Los Angeles International, and New York’s JFK. The NOTAMs specify that these airports will be closed to all general aviation and non-scheduled aircraft, with a few exceptions for based aircraft, emergency, medical, law enforcement, firefighting, and military operations.

NBAA President and CEO, Ed Bolen, expressed concern about the implications that these restrictions will have on the general aviation industry. He stated that the new restrictions will disproportionately impact the GA industry, which is responsible for creating over a million jobs, generating $340 billion in economic impact, and supporting humanitarian flights on a daily basis.

These restrictions come as the US government has already implemented a 10% reduction in flights across 40 high-traffic airspaces nationwide. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has also mentioned the possibility of further raising these restrictions to 20% if the government shutdown persists.

Bolen emphasized the need for Congress to take action and reopen the government in order to restore normal aviation oversight. He urged Congress to repeal the NOTAMs once the government reopens and stated that NBAA is working with other aviation stakeholders as part of the Modern Skies coalition to urge lawmakers to act immediately.

The list of airports affected by these new restrictions includes some of the busiest and most important airports in the US, such as Chicago O’Hare, Dallas Fort Worth, Denver International, Boston Logan, Houston Intercontinental, Atlanta, New York JFK, Los Angeles, Newark Liberty, Phoenix Sky Harbor, Washington Reagan, and Seattle-Tacoma.

In conclusion, the new federal restrictions on business aviation flights at these 12 major airports will have significant consequences for the general aviation industry. It is crucial for Congress to take immediate action to end the government shutdown and repeal these NOTAMs in order to restore normal operations and ensure the safety and efficiency of the US aviation system.
