Aer Lingus, an Irish carrier, operates long-distance flights from Manchester to New York JFK, Barbados, and Orlando in Florida. However, on December 29, 2025, the airline encountered a technical issue with one of its flights, resulting in fire engines surrounding the aircraft upon landing at Manchester Airport. The incident was captured on video by the Think Planes livestream on YouTube, showing the emergency response as two fire engines rushed towards the plane.

Fortunately, all passengers safely disembarked from flight EI030 from Barbados to Manchester. A spokesperson for Aer Lingus stated that the aircraft was met by emergency services as a precaution, but did not provide any further details about the technical issue.

In November of the same year, Aer Lingus announced its decision to close its operational hub at Manchester Airport, potentially affecting around 200 positions. According to the airline, its long-distance flights from Manchester to New York JFK, Barbados, and Orlando have not been as profitable as their Irish long-haul flights.

Aer Lingus launched its long-haul flights from Manchester in 2021, including routes to Disney World in Orlando. However, due to the significant difference in operating margin between their Irish and Manchester bases, the airline has entered into a collective consultation process with their representatives to explore all options, including the possibility of a base closure.

This news follows a strike by Aer Lingus cabin crew at Manchester Airport in October, protesting the pay discrepancy between them and their counterparts in Ireland. Around 130 members of staff participated in the strike.

In summary, Aer Lingus, an Irish carrier, experienced a technical issue with one of its flights from Barbados to Manchester on December 29, 2025. The airline has also announced its plans to close its operational hub at Manchester Airport, citing a significant difference in operating margin compared to their Irish base. This decision may result in the loss of flights from Manchester to destinations such as New York JFK, Barbados, and Orlando.
